There seems to be a bit of a competition this year with the two of the largest search conferences out there. During the first full week of December, Search Engine Strategies Chicago will be going on as well as Webmaster PubCon. There seems to be tension between the two and people are trying to figure out which one will be the more informative one to go to.

PubCon has a more of a devoted following and without the presence of the spring PubCon, webmasters are itching to get away from the dark dungeons where they are locked away with their computers to see the overwhelming lights of freedom called Las Vegas. Even though this conference is a week long many of the webmasters are waiting for this show where they can take off their shackles and find other people who understand their tech lingo.

SES Chicago is the conference where all the campaign managers and those that are dealing with business come and meet with each other. The anticipation for this is not nearly as high as PubCon. A few times a year there is a Search Engine Strategies Conference somewhere in the United States so you may see the same people a few times over. The part where SES succeeds over PubCon is the social scene. The “after night meetings,”—meaning parties—are much grander than PubCon. Every SES conference tries showing up the previous SES by making the after conference scene flashier and more appealing to the crowds. Many people see SES as informational and enjoyable with regards to the social scene.

My vote for the population winner of the two conferences is Webmaster PubCon. The webmasters want to leave the computer and meet with their own kind to talk tech lingo. The social scene at SES is wonderful and is an advantage for attracting crowds; however, finding people who can understand your tech lingo trumps a giant party scene where no one understands a word you’re saying.
